How Compression Works
JPEG and WebP use lossy compression, which discards some visual detail that is hard for the human eye to notice, dramatically reducing file size. Lowering the quality setting removes more detail for a smaller file; higher quality preserves more detail at the cost of size. PNG compression here is lossless, so only redundant data is removed.
